Storm Preparation Tips

Light spring showers can be good for us. They help our gardens to flourish and our grass to grow green. However, when spring rain turns into heavy rainfall and storms, there could be cause for concern. Rainstorms and high winds can wreak havoc for any homeowner, so it’s wise to know what to do to protect your property. While home insurance in CT will help when your house has experienced damage in a natural disaster, keep destruction at bay with these tips.

  • Trim Trees

Take time to examine the trees in your yard or surrounding your house. Storms will often snap large tree branches, meaning that tree limbs become flying debris. Before a storm hits, check how secure the branches are attached to the trunks of trees around your house. If the tree has a loose connection with a large branch, consider sawing it off and disposing of it safely.

  • Check the Roof

The roof is your home’s first barrier against the elements. If it is in poor condition, it is less likely to stay safe in a storm. Before the storm hits, check your roof for any missing slates, soft spots, and poor conditions. If you see any issues, address them immediately.

  • Update Home Inventory

Make sure you have an accurate record of your belongings, because once they are lost or damaged, you might not be able to get them back. Take pictures and videos, keep receipts, and record serial numbers of your belongings. If you have large-ticket items, you may need to secure additional insurance coverage.

  • Review Insurance Coverage

While you hope that a storm won’t damage your home or belongings, natural disasters are out of your control. Should your belongings or property suffer damage or loss, you’ll want to rely on your insurance coverage to step in to help. While home coverage can cover sewer and drains by endorsement, standard homeowners insurance policies do not cover flood damage. For protection from floods, a separate flood insurance policy must be purchased. Since water can cause tremendous damage to a property and destroy belongings, it is well worth securing this additional coverage.
