When you’re involved in an auto accident that causes an injury or property damage, you need to report it to your insurance agent or the insurance carrier, whether you were at fault or not. When you are ready to call your agency, you’ll need to know some facts about the incident. Some of the information you will need is the make and model of the vehicles involved, the drivers, the name of the other party’s insurance company and policy number, where the incident happened, as well as the date and time. Be sure to have these facts handy as well as any other information you may have, pictures, police accident report, etc. Now that you filed an auto claim with your insurance company, what happens next?
Once your claim is reported, you will be contacted by the claims adjuster assigned to your file. In some cases, the adjuster will want to meet with you in person to discuss the logistics of the accident and other times, a simple phone call will do. To support your claim, you may be required to complete a claim form, known as a Proof of Loss form. This is a sworn statement in support of your claim, defining all of the pertinent information that was collected from you in regards to your claim.
Your claims adjuster will then determine the extent to which the claim is covered by your auto insurance company. The adjuster will also spend some time reviewing the information that was provided, pictures, police report etc, to help determine who was at fault in the accident. He or she will help explain the coverage provided by your policy, and help guide you through the entire claims process.
