Is Your Home Protected?

April showers bringing May flowers is all well and good, but what happens when the wind and rain really picks up? If you have trees near your home, you probably dread the sound of the howling wind, knowing it could be too much for those tree limbs overhanging your house to take. If the worst happens and one breaks loose, crashing into your home, what happens?

If that tree was healthy and the limb fell purely because the storm was so strong, your homeowners insurance will generally kick in to cover the damage. Remember, though, that if you were negligent with your maintenance and the limb fell because the tree was damaged or rotting, the fault will fall to you and your homeowners insurance will consequently not protect you.

What if the tree that damages your home grows from your neighbors’ property? Similar to the above case, if the tree was healthy and felled purely by the storm, your home insurance policy would help cover your home. Similarly, if a limb from a healthy tree on your property falls and hits your neighbors’ home, you will generally not be held responsible.

If the tree limb falls not on your home but on the street, your municipality should cover the removal of the tree. Inquire with your town or city to learn how local processes will step in to help cover expenses in this case.
